When it was time to select my classes for the fall, I was thrilled that a writing class was only required for the first year in college. English was always my least favorite subject and writing was my weakness. But after completing my English class my first semester in college, my perspective on writing changed entirely. I did not only grow to love writing but I realized the importance of writing in life. There are many different forms of writing and knowing how to properly format each writing piece is, indeed, beneficial for me in the future. I realized that writing is not only required in college but in the real world. Writing is an important skill to acquire that can have a positive impact.
Writing is a major aspect in life. Susan Blau and Kathryn Burak stated, "...you will be evaluated not just on your ideas but also on how well you express them" (60). In college, almost every writing piece has a thesis which is supported throughout the essay. But how the thesis is supported is what matters. Illustrating the purpose of the writing piece to the indicated audience and closing with a memorable remark makes the writing piece effective. Bringing life to a writing piece makes it highly valuable. As important it is to obtain good grades on every writing assignment in college, it is important to acquire these writing skills, continue to make use of them and improve through college and beyond. With this, writing can certainly impact any job opportunity in the future.
There is a wide range of different writing pieces that I can come across in the future. As Blau and Burak stated, "In education, in business, and in the arts and sciences, employer's biggest complaint is the unclear writing produced by their new hires" (60). Each job requires a different writing format and having the knowledge of all the formats will make me more qualified. To demonstrate, if I was given the task to write a report on an incident to be published in the New York Times and I was unaware of the lead required at the beginning of the report and I included my opinion, it will not be published and I will lose my job. Learning how to write in every form will prevent this from happening in my future.
Even though I am not required to take anymore writing classes after the first year, I would still have writing assignments for other classes, write an essay when I apply to graduate school as well as my cover letter for jobs and writing in the job itself. Writing definitely matters in college and beyond. Although I have not learned every single writing style, I am still ahead of the game only being a freshman in college due to my writing projects this semester.
